Tables boards of this period, often played in inns and pubs, were larger than many earlier boards. The borders are raised, nailed in place, and protected by metal corner plates. The points are painted in alternate black and white. An approximate price for this set would be in the region of £280.
The board, like earlier tables boards, would have been used for a number of games; which, from around the mid-seventeenth century, could have included backgammon, first recorded c. 1645.
Playing pieces are of natural (white) and stained (black) beech wood; and these are supplied, with three bone dice, in a drawstring pouch.
