Alfonso X of Castile 1221-84 was an intellectual, scientist, musician and poet. He authored and commissioned many texts on a broad range of subjects and employed Muslim, Jewish and Christian scholars largely to enable the translation of Arabic texts into the Castilian language. His 'Book of Games' was one such text, though the magnificent illustrations were his own addition. The book is of unique importance in recording the introduction of many board and dice games into Europe. The dice games are of particular interest, being the primary record of the rules of such games in Europe. This set includes the rules to all ten of Alfonso's dice games, all of which can be played with three dice.
